Bradenton sits on the south bank of the Manatee River, with Palmetto across the water to the north. The downtown Riverwalk follows the river past parks and docks, the Village of the Arts packs galleries into old bungalows, and DeSoto National Memorial marks the river's mouth on the west side. Out toward the Gulf, the old commercial fishing village of Cortez still lands fish at its docks.

East of I-75, Lakewood Ranch is a large planned community with golf, parks and newer homes. Mainland rentals here are usually houses rather than condos, with more bedrooms and pools for the money than you get on the islands, and Anna Maria Island is about 20 to 30 minutes west.
