Sarasota & Anna Maria Island · 2,772 licensed rentals
Anna Maria Island is about seven miles of Gulf beach split between three small cities: Anna Maria at the north tip, Holmes Beach in the middle and Bradenton Beach to the south. There are no high-rise towers here. The island is mostly raised cottages, pastel beach houses and small condo buildings, and a free trolley runs the length of it so you can leave the car parked for the week.
Two causeways connect it to Bradenton: Manatee Avenue lands in Holmes Beach and Cortez Road lands in Bradenton Beach. Rentals range from one-bedroom units a block off the sand to big pool homes on the bayside canals. It is a family island, with gentle water most of the year and the sun setting over the Gulf every night.

Not once you arrive. The free trolley runs from Anna Maria down to Coquina Beach, and most of the island is flat and easy to bike. Ask the owner how many parking spaces come with the rental, since many cottages have room for only one or two cars.
