Downtown St. Petersburg faces Tampa Bay, and most of its waterfront is public park land, a long run of green space, marinas and the St. Pete Pier. The Dalí Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts are on the water, and Central Avenue is the main street for restaurants, galleries and breweries. Just north, the Old Northeast is a historic neighborhood of brick streets and 1920s bungalows a few blocks from the bay.

Gulfport, on Boca Ciega Bay to the southwest, is a small arts town with a walkable waterfront and a casino ballroom from the 1930s. Inland, Seminole, Largo and Pinellas Park have larger homes with pools, 15 to 20 minutes from the Gulf beaches. A city rental here works well if you want the beach by day and dinner downtown at night.

    St. Petersburg rental questions

Is St. Petersburg on the beach?

Downtown St. Petersburg sits on Tampa Bay, not the Gulf. The Gulf beaches at St. Pete Beach and Treasure Island are about 20 to 25 minutes west. If waking up on the sand matters most, look at the beach-town areas; if you want the city with the beach as a day trip, stay here.
