Polk County sits halfway between Orlando and Tampa on I-4, and it is lake country: Lakeland alone has dozens of named lakes inside the city. Downtown Lakeland wraps around Lake Mirror, the swans on Lake Morton are a local fixture, and Florida Southern College holds the largest single-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings anywhere. The Detroit Tigers have held spring training in Lakeland for decades.
Winter Haven, about 25 minutes east, is built around its Chain of Lakes, linked by canals for boating, and is home to LEGOLAND Florida, which opened on the old Cypress Gardens grounds. Rentals across both cities are mostly single-family and lakefront homes, often roomier for the money than near the big parks, which suits LEGOLAND families, spring training trips and anyone splitting time between Orlando and the Gulf coast.

Elsewhere in Orlando
If LEGOLAND is the main event, yes. Homes in Winter Haven are typically 10 to 20 minutes from the park, compared with 45 minutes or more from Kissimmee or Orlando, and that matters with small children and nap schedules. Davenport is a good middle ground if the trip also includes the Orlando parks.
