The old city is small enough to cover on foot. St. George Street is the pedestrian spine, lined with shops and restaurants in restored Spanish colonial buildings, and it runs from the old City Gate down toward the Plaza de la Constitucion. The Castillo de San Marcos, a coquina stone fort finished by the Spanish in the 1690s, guards the bayfront, and Flagler College fills the grand former Ponce de Leon Hotel a block off the plaza.
Rentals here are cottages, carriage houses and condos tucked into the narrow streets, plus homes in Lincolnville, the historic neighborhood just south of downtown with deep roots in the civil rights movement. Vilano Beach sits across the bridge to the north, and the golf communities around World Golf Village are off I-95 west of town. Parking in the historic district is tight, so ask the owner what comes with the place.
