Fort Myers grew up along the Caloosahatchee River, and McGregor Boulevard, lined with royal palms, still runs past the winter homes Thomas Edison and Henry Ford built side by side on the riverbank. Downtown, the River District has brick streets, restaurants and a riverfront to walk. Every February and March the city fills with baseball fans: the Boston Red Sox train at JetBlue Park and the Minnesota Twins at Hammond Stadium.

Rentals on the mainland are mostly single-family homes and condos in established neighborhoods, from North Fort Myers across the river down to Estero near Florida Gulf Coast University. Lehigh Acres, inland to the east, is newer and roomier. A mainland base puts you closer to the airport and shopping, with the beaches and Sanibel 25 to 45 minutes away.
